But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief

Paul describes the Rapture Event towards the end times. This information is directed at the believers, and warns us to prepare for it. God's intention is for salvation of both the dead and those still alive in Christ when this happens. This event will happen suddenly, but to the believers, it will not be a total surprise because they would have been expecting it.

Then Paul gives some general encouragement which include:
- recognize the work that people do and recognize the leaders.
- live in peace and harmony, not in an unruly manner and pursue good towards each other.
- rejoice and pray always.
- interesting to note the encouragement not to "despise prophecies".

Finally Paul commands that this letter to be read "to all the holy brethren", probably meaning all Christians, rather than just the Thessalonians.

1 Thessalonians 5
The Day of the Lord

1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

Various Exhortations

12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Blessing and Admonition

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.

27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy[a] brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

None of My Words will be Postponed Any More, but the Word which I Speak will be Done

In God's amazing patience and grace with His people, apart from giving His message in words to Ezekiel, He also told Ezekiel to act out the prophecies. In this case He told Ezekiel to act as if he is going into captivity, by packing his belongings and wandering to various places. God anticipates people will question Ezekiel and in that case, Ezekiel should tell them about the coming exile to Babylon, and also scatter others to various places.

Another remarkable point God raised was that His people at that time said that the "days are prolonged", "every vision fails". These people have heard many prophecies and they have not happened yet. So they believe it will not happen soon or in their lifetimes. God knew this and told Ezekiel His message that, in that time, the prophecies and visions will be fulfilled. God told Ezekiel that his words will not be postponed anymore. How similar is it today that many Christ believers do not think that the Day is near and brush off prophetic words. There will be a point in time where prophecies are fulfilled and the Lord told us to look for the signs and know the season.

Ezekiel 12
Judah’s Captivity Portrayed

1 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2 “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house.

3 “Therefore, son of man, prepare your belongings for captivity, and go into captivity by day in their sight. You shall go from your place into captivity to another place in their sight. It may be that they will consider, though they are a rebellious house. 4 By day you shall bring out your belongings in their sight, as though going into captivity; and at evening you shall go in their sight, like those who go into captivity. 5 Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry your belongings out through it. 6 In their sight you shall bear them on your shoulders and carry them out at twilight; you shall cover your face, so that you cannot see the ground, for I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”

7 So I did as I was commanded. I brought out my belongings by day, as though going into captivity, and at evening I dug through the wall with my hand. I brought them out at twilight, and I bore them on my shoulder in their sight.

8 And in the morning the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’ 10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are among them.”’ 11 Say, ‘I am a sign to you. As I have done, so shall it be done to them; they shall be carried away into captivity.’ 12 And the prince who is among them shall bear his belongings on his shoulder at twilight and go out. They shall dig through the wall to carry them out through it. He shall cover his face, so that he cannot see the ground with his eyes. 13 I will also spread My net over him, and he shall be caught in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he shall not see it, though he shall die there. 14 I will scatter to every wind all who are around him to help him, and all his troops; and I will draw out the sword after them.

15 “Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I scatter them among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries. 16 But I will spare a few of their men from the sword, from famine, and from pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the Gentiles wherever they go. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.”

Judgment Not Postponed

17 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling and anxiety. 19 And say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord God to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the land of Israel: “They shall eat their bread with anxiety, and drink their water with dread, so that her land may be emptied of all who are in it, because of the violence of all those who dwell in it. 20 Then the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall become desolate; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”’”

21 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 22 “Son of man, what is this proverb that you people have about the land of Israel, which says, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision fails’? 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I will lay this proverb to rest, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel.”’ But say to them, ‘“The days are at hand, and the fulfillment of every vision. 24 For no more shall there be any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 For I am the Lord. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass; it will no more be postponed; for in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and perform it,” says the Lord God.’”

26 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 27 “Son of man, look, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’ 28 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “None of My words will be postponed any more, but the word which I speak will be done,” says the Lord God.’”

Jehu Kills Joram, Ahaziah and Jezebel

The LORD acted directly in announcing to Elisha to anoint Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat as King over Israel. Although Israel and Judah had split, God still regarded both as His people. The sins of Ahab and Jezebel had finally made God select Jehu to end the family of Ahab. At the time, Jehu was one of the commanders in the army of Israel. When Elisha's servants anointed him king, his peers all supported and declared him king.

Joram, the king of Israel, had just returned to recover from his wounds after fighting against Syria. When Jehu reached Joram, they came out to see each other with Ahaziah, King of Judah, at Joram's side. Jehu was did not hesitate to show his intentions and shot at King Joram. His body was brought to Jezreel and thus fulfilling a prophecy about Ahab and his sons. Incredibly, Jehu also killed Ahaziah even though God had not ordered it.

Finally, Jehu went to the palace of Jezebel and convinced a few eunuchs to throw her down. There was not much left of her body as the prophecy about her was also fulfilled.

2 Kings 9

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

 1 And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him, “Get yourself ready, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth Gilead. 2 Now when you arrive at that place, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, and go in and make him rise up from among his associates, and take him to an inner room. 3 Then take the flask of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, ‘Thus says the LORD: “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’ Then open the door and flee, and do not delay.”
4 So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 And when he arrived, there were the captains of the army sitting; and he said, “I have a message for you, Commander.”
Jehu said, “For which one of us?”
And he said, “For you, Commander.” 6 Then he arose and went into the house. And he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘I have anointed you king over the people of the LORD, over Israel. 7 You shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel. 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab all the males in Israel, both bond and free. 9 So I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 The dogs shall eat Jezebel on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her.’” And he opened the door and fled.
11 Then Jehu came out to the servants of his master, and one said to him, “Is all well? Why did this madman come to you?”
And he said to them, “You know the man and his babble.”
12 And they said, “A lie! Tell us now.”
So he said, “Thus and thus he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’”
13 Then each man hastened to take his garment and put it under him on the top of the steps; and they blew trumpets, saying, “Jehu is king!”

Joram of Israel Killed

14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram had been defending Ramoth Gilead, he and all Israel, against Hazael king of Syria. 15 But King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which the Syrians had inflicted on him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, “If you are so minded, let no one leave or escape from the city to go and tell it in Jezreel.” 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram was laid up there; and Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Joram.
17 Now a watchman stood on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came, and said, “I see a company of men.”
And Joram said, “Get a horseman and send him to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’”
18 So the horseman went to meet him, and said, “Thus says the king: ‘Is it peace?’”
And Jehu said, “What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me.”
So the watchman reported, saying, “The messenger went to them, but is not coming back.”
19 Then he sent out a second horseman who came to them, and said, “Thus says the king: ‘Is it peace?’”
And Jehu answered, “What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me.”
20 So the watchman reported, saying, “He went up to them and is not coming back; and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously!”
21 Then Joram said, “Make ready.” And his chariot was made ready. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot; and they went out to meet Jehu, and met him on the property of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 Now it happened, when Joram
So he answered, “What peace, as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?”
23 Then Joram turned around and fled, and said to Ahaziah, “Treachery, Ahaziah!” 24 Now Jehu drew his bow with full strength and shot Jehoram between his arms; and the arrow came out at his heart, and he sank down in his chariot. 25 Then Jehu said to Bidkar his captain, “Pick him up, and throw him into the tract of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite; for remember, when you and I were riding together behind Ahab his father, that the LORD laid this burden upon him: 26 ‘Surely I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,’ says the LORD, ‘and I will repay you in this plot,’ says the LORD. Now therefore, take and throw him on the plot of ground, according to the word of the LORD.”

Ahaziah of Judah Killed

27 But when Ahaziah king of Judah saw this, he fled by the road to Beth Haggan.[a] So Jehu pursued him, and said, “Shoot him also in the chariot.” And they shot him at the Ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. Then he fled to Megiddo, and died there. 28 And his servants carried him in the chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the City of David. 29 In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king over Judah.

Jezebel’s Violent Death

30 Now when Jehu had come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she put paint on her eyes and adorned her head, and looked through a window. 31 Then, as Jehu entered at the gate, she said, “Is it peace, Zimri, murderer of your master?”
32 And he looked up at the window, and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” So two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 Then he said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses; and he trampled her underfoot. 34 And when he had gone in, he ate and drank. Then he said, “Go now, see to this accursed woman, and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.” 35 So they went to bury her, but they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 Therefore they came back and told him. And he said, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel;[b] 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as refuse on the surface of the field, in the plot at Jezreel, so that they shall not say, “Here lies Jezebel.”’”

Jacob's Last Blessings and Prophecies

The last words of Jacob to his sons, apart from blessings, is also filled with prophecies. Some of the prophecies may even be recognizable in our time.

Reuben - although physically the first born, he was not allocated the inheritance of the first born, which went to Joseph. His sin of adultery with his father's concubine is remembered.

Simeon and Levi - their cruelty was shown in the incident at Shechem.

Judah - though not a perfect man by any measure, was granted the honour to be the line of royalty of Israel. The Messiah - king and priest - will come from him.

Joseph - like Judah, the blessings on Joseph was also quite elaborate compared to the other brothers. This translated into reality for the people from these two tribes.

Finally, before his death, Jacob reminded his sons of his wish to be buried at the land that Abraham bought.

Genesis 49

Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

 1 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

 2 “ Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
      And listen to Israel your father.

 3 “ Reuben, you are my firstborn,
      My might and the beginning of my strength,
      The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.

 4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
      Because you went up to your father’s bed;
      Then you defiled it—
      He went up to my couch.

 5 “ Simeon and Levi are brothers;
      Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place.

 6 Let not my soul enter their council;
      Let not my honor be united to their assembly;
      For in their anger they slew a man,
      And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox.

 7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
      And their wrath, for it is cruel!
      I will divide them in Jacob
      And scatter them in Israel.

 8 “ Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
      Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
      Your father’s children shall bow down before you.

 9 Judah is a lion’s whelp;
      From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
      He bows down, he lies down as a lion;
      And as a lion, who shall rouse him?

 10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
      Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
      Until Shiloh comes;
      And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

 11 Binding his donkey to the vine,
      And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
      He washed his garments in wine,
      And his clothes in the blood of grapes.

 12 His eyes are darker than wine,
      And his teeth whiter than milk.

 13 “ Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea;
      He shall become a haven for ships,
      And his border shall adjoin Sidon.

 14 “ Issachar is a strong donkey,
      Lying down between two burdens;

 15 He saw that rest was good,
      And that the land was pleasant;
      He bowed his shoulder to bear a burden,
      And became a band of slaves.

 16 “Dan shall judge his people
      As one of the tribes of Israel.

 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
      A viper by the path,
      That bites the horse’s heels
      So that its rider shall fall backward.

 18 I have waited for your salvation, O LORD!

 19 “Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him,
      But he shall triumph at last.

 20 “Bread from Asher shall be rich,
      And he shall yield royal dainties.

 21 “ Naphtali is a deer let loose;
      He uses beautiful words.

 22 “ Joseph is a fruitful bough,
      A fruitful bough by a well;
      His branches run over the wall.

 23 The archers have bitterly grieved him,
      Shot at him and hated him.

 24 But his bow remained in strength,
      And the arms of his hands were made strong
      By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob
      (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),

 25 By the God of your father who will help you,
      And by the Almighty who will bless you
      With blessings of heaven above,
      Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
      Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.

 26 The blessings of your father
      Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors,
      Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
      They shall be on the head of Joseph,
      And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

 27 “ Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
      In the morning he shall devour the prey,
      And at night he shall divide the spoil.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

Jacob’s Death and Burial

29 Then he charged them and said to them: “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
